Impact in motion: World Waternet Annual report 2024
26 June 2025Sometimes results exceed expectations. Projects are completed as planned and impact is delivered on the ground. That is not always the case, increased tensions and conflict can hinder our work, but we remain dedicated in our stewardship role for healthy water cycles. In 2024, some of our partnerships concluded and new ones took their place. We remain committed to our Water Operators’ Partnerships in improving water access and sanitation for over 6 million people by 2030, in 2024 we are proud to have reached 3.5 million.
A year of regeneration and ambition
2024 marked a pivotal year for World Waternet. A year defined by regeneration, bold ambition, and collective action. As we reflected on 17 years of progress, our commitment to treating the water cycle as a global common good has never been stronger. Guided by our vision and sharpened by experience, we set our sights on doubling our impact by 2030, aiming to improve the lives of 6 million people through resilient, sustainable water solutions.
“We are ready for collective action and impact. The time for waiting and hesitation is over. The moment to join forces is now.”
— Frodo van Oostveen, World Waternet CEO
Global partnerships with local impact
World Waternet’s impact is only possible through strong Water Cycle Partnerships. In 2024, we remained active across Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and South America, supporting local Water Operators’ Partnerships (WOPs). These collaborations are essential for translating our vision into action, whether by improving access to safe drinking water, reducing water losses, or strengthening operational excellence.
Our collaboration is a catalyst for lasting change in Nairobi,” shares Eng. Nahashon Muguna. In Ethiopia, Eng. Alemtsehay Tsega Awoke notes, “The knowledge exchange has elevated our water quality standards”. And in Laos, Mr. Sitikone Panalaiy reflects, “Together, we are making water safer and more accessible”.
Real impact
Now for the most anticipated part of any annual plan: the results. In 2024, World Waternet’s partnerships improved water services for 3.5 million people worldwide, with standout achievements like bringing safe water to 125,000 people in Jordan, launching a new water and agriculture initiative in Burkina Faso, and an agroforestry initiative in Tanzania. These milestones alongside strengthened operations in Kenya, Ethiopia, Suriname, Palestine, and Lao PDR, reflect our commitment to resilient, future-proof water cycles. Navigating change with resilience
The year was not without its challenges. Geopolitical instability in regions such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Palestine tested our adaptability. Yet, our teams and partners demonstrated remarkable resilience, maintaining support through remote collaboration and flexible training solutions. Internally, the decision to split Waternet, our public water cycle company, required us to reset partnerships and secure continued access to technical expertise. Despite these changes, our mission remained unwavering.
“All these changes require a great deal of flexibility from World Waternet’s management and team, as well as from our partners. I would like to thank you all for your vision, determination and positive energy in 2024!”
— Lidi Remmelzwaal, President of the World Waternet Board
