Partner MORUWASA in Tanzania receives 70M EUR investment funding from Agence Française de Développement (AFD)

28 May 2020

On 27 May 2020, Agence Française de Développement (AFD) has signed the 70 MILLION EURO (180BN Tanzanian shilling) contract for investment funding to support the infrastructure and capacity development of MORUWASA, our WOP partner in Morogoro

Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa and has one of the youngest populations on the continent. Since 2000, it has experienced dynamic and stable growth, but is still unable to make its population benefit from it. In order to guarantee its inhabitants access to essential services, AFD supports the country in the water and energy sectors. Despite significant resources, Tanzania regularly faces a shortage of clean water. For a large part of the population, access to water and connection to an efficient sanitation network remain problematic. This is also the case for population in the service area of Morogoro Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (MORUWASA).

Managing Director Eng. Tamim Katakweba (MORUWASA): “We hope that through the AFD funding and the capacity building programme as part of the WaterWorX partnership, we can overcome the challenges of water and sanitation in the municipality of Morogoro, Kilosa and Mikumi Towns.”

Since 2017 World Waternet is working with (MORUWASA). In this Water Operator Partnership. World Waternet shares its expertise and skills for improving the drinking water and sanitation services, non-revenue water reduction, operation and maintenance, organizational development and investment in pro-poor services. The ultimate objective is more equal distribution of water sources, more secure and constant water delivery to increase access to safe drinking water and sanitation (SDG6).

Even during the COVID-19 outbreak, we have managed to continue our collaboration via online meetings and reviewing documentation. Furthermore, we have supported our WOP partner with operational guidelines and financial support to ensure protective measures of operational staff.

The AFD support will further strengthen and improve the performance of our project partner and bring the basic WASH services to the population of MORUWASA into scope.
