Introducing the first Sarphati Sanitation Awards Poo-cast

07 May 2020

Although the Sarphati Sanitation Awards () only happen once every two years, the global sanitation challenge is important year-round. To continue to honour the work of sanitation innovators and keep the push for safe sanitation going, we invite you to check out our new sanitation podcast – “The Poo-cast” by the Sarphati Sanitation Awards!

The Poo-cast is hosted by Sjef Ernes, former managing director of  Aqua for All, who has many years of experience in facilitating and financing access to sanitation. In our first episode, Sjef sat down with the finalists for the 2019 Sarphati Sanitation Award for Promising Entrepreneur (Tiger Toilet ()Live Clean Initiatives () and X-Runner ()) to discuss how their businesses find creative and sustainable solutions to their local sanitation challenges. The guests also explore the SDG linkages of their work, and their views on what needs to change in the sanitation sector to create sustainable long-term solutions.

This episode was recorded mid-March, at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and as such does not reflect the current and changing state of sanitation challenges worldwide. Especially now, when public health is at the forefront of our global agenda, it is crucial that we continue to shed light on the 4.5 billion people worldwide who lack access to safe sanitation.

You can listen to the Poo-cast on your phone on the Apple Podcasts ()Stitcher Podcasts () and Spotify () apps, and on your browser here ()

We hope you enjoy the first episode of the Poo-cast – don’t forget to rate and subscribe to get notified for future episodes.

About the Sarphati Sanitation Awards

In 2013 Aqua for All, World Waternet and the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) initiated the biannual Sarphati Sanitation Awards (SSA), awarded during the biennial Amsterdam International Water Week (AIWW). The Sarphati Sanitation Awards were installed to honour contributions to the global sanitation & public health challenge through entrepreneurship. The Awards are named after Dr. Samuel Sarphati, a doctor who lived in the mid-19th century and was convinced that proper sanitation was a crucial factor for improving public health. With his entrepreneurial spirit, he was able to demonstrate money could be made by collecting human waste and transporting it out of the city. He connected public and private parties and made an important contribution in finding sustainable solutions to the sanitation challenge.
