Collectors Week in Bekaa Valley, Lebanon to increase subscription and collection rates

17 April 2018

The Collectors Week has been completed successfully! From 12 – 17 April, a team of the Bekaa Water Establishment (BWE) and World Waternet representatives, as well as municipality staff took to the streets of the municipalities Qaraoun and Ghazze, to spread that message that improvement of water services can only be done if costs for potable water and treating wastewater are covered.

We paid a visit to people’s homes and visited shops, mosques, schools, the Lebanese International University in Ghazze to spread the word. Inhabitants of Qaraoun and Ghazze were urged to subscribe or, if already subscribed, to pay their water bills. The mayor of Qaraoun also joined the street campaign. The Collectors Week has been a success, many people were receptive to our message and willing to pay their bills or subscribe to BWE’s services. The Collectors Week is part of the Billing & Awareness Campaign, run by the Bekaa Water Establishment and World Waternet, which aims to increase its subscription and collection rates, in order to improve BWE’s service delivery in the Bekaa Valley. This campaign is related to the project Strengthening the Lebanese Water and Agriculture Sector, financed by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
